Student Activities and Sports

National Junior Honor Society

The Las Vegas Day School National Junior Honor Society is an honorary organization whose purpose is to recognize outstanding seventh and eighth grade students who have met high standards not only scholastically, but also in the areas of service, leadership, character, and citizenship. The primary focus of NJ HS is community involvement and charity work.

Student Council

The purpose of the Student Council is to promote the development of leadership skills and sponsor the extra-curricular activities. The organization is composed of four officers, elected at large, as well as class representatives, selected by each of the middle school classes.

Science Club

Students with a keen interest in science may join the Science Club and select areas of interest from the various science fields of aerodynamics, astronomy, chemistry, electronics, geology, physics, biology, botany, and zoology.

Journalism

Students will write and edit the articles for the school newspaper. As well as take all photographs. The newspaper contains school news, opinions, interviews, comics, and puzzles.

Computer Club

Computer Club members use various aspects of computing while exploring a variety of software, conducting independent projects as well as entering competitions such as the Future City and Lego League Robotic Competition. Computer Club also engages in fall and spring community service projects and takes field trips.

Video Production

The Video Production students explore various aspects of video production from scripting and set design to creating videos using stop action and clay figures. They also film using digital cameras, importing the video into a computer for editing. Those original compositions are then entered into multimedia competitions.

Math Olympiads/Mathcounts

Math Olympiads is open to sixth-grade students who have a high interest in math. It offers these students the opportunity to use their math skills in a competitive setting. Mathcounts is open to seventh- and eighth-grade students. It offers these students a chance to use and increase their problem-solving skills by applying them to new situations in a competitive setting.

Quest Club

Quest Club is open to all second-, third-, fourth-, and fifth-grade students. It is a program designed to strengthen the ties between the home, the school, and the community in support of children. Quest helps teach children important life skills such as responsibility, self-discipline, good judgment, and the ability to get along with others.

Drama Club

Students acquire poise and develop a public presence through participation in speaking and performing before peer groups. Students study acting techniques and all the aspects of play production and direction

Choir

The school offers age appropriate choral experiences for children who love to sing and perform. Elementary Choir, open to first and second grade students, stresses unison singing and provides opportunity to accompany themselves on percussive instruments. Honor Choir is open to third through fifth grade students. Areas of concentration feature part singing as well as unison singing. Students will also have opportunity to use percussive instruments to add another level of musical harmony. Middle School Choir offers part singing with an emphasis on good vocal tone production. Middle School students will receive experience in choir rehearsal techniques, reading choral scores, and sight reading in preparation for future more advanced choral experiences.

Junior Band & Senior Band

Junior Band is for first-time beginners in the fourth through eighth grades. Instruction is offered on various concert band instruments including flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, trombone, and percussion.

Senior Band is open to fifth- through eighth-grade students who have had at least one year of experience on their instruments. The band plays music of various styles (pop, classical, jazz). Music programs are scheduled throughout the year representing their accomplishments.

Chess Club

The chess club is divided into three groups to include students in 2nd through 8th grades. No previous knowledge of the game of chess is necessary. Beginners through advanced players are welcome to participate to learn new strategies for competitive tournament play in local and state events.

Sports

The sports program consists of a variety of competitive activities. These include: boys and girls basketball, co-ed soccer, volleyball, cross country, softball, flag football, table tennis, swimming, tennis, golf and track and field. The school competes with other private schools in the area. The sports program culminates with an awards program each semester to honor all participants, as well as Most Valuable and Most Improved Players. A variety of intramural sports are offered during lunch to encourage friendly competition within the school.

There is also a cheerleading squad, which is open to all middle school girls who attend the mandatory practice sessions and are able to perform at a satisfactory skill level.
