Elementary School Programs– First through Fifth Grade
Reading
A comprehensive literature-based reading series is used in the elementary school. Phonics and the skills necessary for oral reading and comprehension are taught. Emphasis is placed on vocabulary development, literary appreciation, and study skills. A literature program involving the reading and discussing of novels is also included.
English
The English program aims to improve written and oral expression. Creative writing, poetry, letter writing, handwriting skills, spelling, grammar and punctuation skills are stressed. Group discussion is used to increase the student's ability to present ideas orally to both small and large groups. Study skills are taught and instruction is given on how to use various kinds of reference books.

Progressive emphasis is placed on basic operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, using whole numbers, fractions and decimals. Concepts of measurement, geometry, area and volume, percentages, graphic representation, and problem solving are also taught.
Science
Science units range from human growth and change and the importance of proper nutrition; the environment, which highlights the subjects of the seasons, weather, rocks and minerals, trees and plants, conservation, sound and light, ecology, and physical and earth science; and the animal world. Students demonstrate their understanding of the scientific process by working in small groups to complete science lab activities.
Social Studies
Social Studies units include the study of the United States and the world, geography local, state and federal government, map skills and American History. Current events are discussed and students develop an awareness of the importance of events occurring around the world, as well as in the United States.

Students become familiar with the keyboard, computer operations, computer terminology, and software usage. Logic and problem-solving strategies, as well as keyboarding skills, are developed. The computer laboratory is equipped with the most current technology available.
Music
Emphasis is on rhythm, melody, and coordination through rhythmic activities such as small percussion instrument playing, circle dances, and creative movement, while singing is developed throughout the program. Singing in tune, dancing and playing percussion instruments to the beat are a continued focus. The program culminates with the playing of four-part percussion ensembles including xylophones and large percussion.
Physical Education
Large- and small-muscle motor coordination skills are taught along with creative, rhythmic, and perceptual movements. Students participate in swimming, kickball, T-ball, soccer, cooperative games, indoor bowling, basketball, softball, volleyball, floor hockey and relay activities, in addition to learning various exercises and ball skills. Cooperation, skill-building, teamwork, and sportsmanship are emphasized.
Art
Students in grades one through five will be given the building blocks of art history, art criticism, and creative expression with Art Connections. This visual arts program teaches fundamental instruction in the elements and principles of art, and is built upon each year. Each lesson exposes students to works of fine art, history and culture, creative art production activities, and critical thinking.
Spanish
The Spanish program consists of basic vocabulary in categories such as colors, numbers, days of the week, months, animals, greetings, and conversation. Students will also be introduced to grammar and language structure. Songs, games and videos will keep this program exciting and help prepare students for future studies in Spanish.
